Optima school readiness test
School readiness tests are done with Grade R learners. The Optima school readiness test does not only test academic skills required for Grade 1 but also emotional maturity. School readiness tests can be done in the middle of the year to determine what skills need to be “sharpened” before a child proceed to Grade 1 or at the end of the year to determine if they are ready to proceed or not. If a child is not ready to proceed to Grade 1 the OT can use the Optima school readiness test to prove that a child is not ready. A report and letter can be sent to the Educational Department to keep a child in Grade R another year if needed. Can be done individual or in groups if done at schools.

Screenings
Screenings are done to determine if a child might benefit from Occupational Therapy. It is usually done if a parent or teacher pick up specific aspects a child has difficulty with. In a screening, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, basic concepts and perception, concentration and instruction following is tested without the use of standardised tests. At Little Lamb Occupational Therapy, we do screenings at most of our primary and pre-schools, but it can also be done at our offices.

Developmental screenings
This is specifically for children between the ages 0-2 years old to determine if they reached their developmental milestone.

Assessments, written reports, and feedback sessions
In assessment, standardised and non-standardised tests are used to test fine motor, gross motor, visual perception, body concepts, sensory integration, reading and math. A full assessment usually takes between an hour to two hours. A written report and 45-minute feedback session is optional. The written report clearly states all the different aspects tested within the assessment as well as recommendations for what must happen next. This can then be shared with the child’s school, doctors or other therapists and team members.

Assistance in applying at remedial schools
If it has been identified that a child needs to attend a remedial school, we can assist in completing the necessary documentation and write reports.

School site visits
School site visits are done at times in order to observe a child in their daily environment at school being surrounded with their peers. It is also used to engage with the child’s teacher and make recommendations with regards to making adaptations for the child within the classroom.

Training for teachers
At Little Lamb Occupational therapy, we enjoy doing training sessions with our teachers at the schools we are involved at. Different topics are discussed such as how to identify if a child requires occupational therapy, sensory reactivity, how to improve fine motor skills withing the classroom etc.
